The system is designed to function solely off the forced air system for heating (or cooling with the central A/C unit), but can be supplemented by the concrete slab. Once warm, the slab serves as thermal mass that stays warm over several days. It’s handy during shoulder seasons or to make the walk-out feel as warm as the main floor of a home. It functions on a very simple mechanical thermostat – you set it, and forget it!
